Eleanor + Derek – Real Wedding
We were lucky enough to have one of our beautiful weddings featured in The Brissy Bride’s blog earlier in the year and they told Eleanor and Derek’s story so beautifully we couldn’t help but share! Eleanor’s story is lovely and she holds a special place in our hearts as she is the best friend of one of our fantastic photographers Corrina!
Eleanor and Derek met in Sydney, Australia where they both grew up. Two months into their relationship, Derek found out that he had to move interstate for his job indefinitely. It was still such a new romance and Eleanor was devastated that it would all be over so fast. To her surprise and absolute delight, Derek asked her to pack her bags and move with him! They both knew it was a little crazy but they followed their hearts and Eleanor took the risk of moving her entire life to Queensland in the hope that Derek might be the one. Now almost six years and one stunning winery wedding later, they both know that it’s the best decision they ever made!
The Planning Experience
“Sirromet Winery was where we won our house at auction and it seemed fitting that since it was where we bought our home together, it should also be where we got married. Not only is Sirromet a stunning venue but it held such significance for us. We knew from the moment we got engaged that we wanted to have our winery wedding there.”
“We had one rule with our wedding: the only two people whose opinions mattered was Derek’s and mine. It’s so easy with weddings to get caught up in doing things out of obligation and making others happy. While we knew we wanted our day to be shared with close friends and family, we wanted to make sure our day was about each other. Nothing mattered more than that.”
Finding the Dress
“It’s so funny how you have this idea in your head of the perfect wedding dress you want. It all ends up going completely out the window. At the first boutique my girlfriends and I went to, I felt that all of the dresses were just okay. I always thought I’d have this big moment where I just knew I was in my dream dress. But none of the dresses gave me that feeling. I was so disheartened after trying them on and not falling in love with any – but the search finally turned around when we headed to Pearl Bridal Gold Coast. I had the style I wanted so set in my mind that when my bridesmaid suggested I try on one that was completely different to what I wanted, I was convinced I wouldn’t like it. But then I put it on and I got all those wonderful butterfly feelings where you just know nothing will ever compare. There was this one moment where I walked out in it, and all my girlfriends ooed and ahhed and I looked straight to my bridesmaid and we just sort of shared this silent moment between us. And we both just knew that this one was ‘the one’.”
“My sister has a candle business on the side and created our vanilla caramel candles for our wedding favours. It was that much more special that my sisters, bridesmaid and myself we made them together in the days leading up to the wedding.”
“We wanted our styling to be simple and elegant with a touch of rustic. Sirromet Winery set up our entire ceremony and reception venues and all we had to do was bring the place cards, flowers and menus. They were fantastic!”
“As a wedding gift, my sister organised a framed drawing of Derek and I to be placed on an easel in our reception. Everyone who attended our wedding signed it. This was so much more personal for us than a guest book and it now hangs above our fireplace and is a wonderful memory of all our loved ones we shared our special day with.
My bridesmaid also surprised me the night before my wedding with a brooch from my grandparents who had both passed away. It was a picture of them on their wedding day and as we got ready the next morning, she tied it around my bouquet so that they could be there with me as I went down the aisle. That was the most beautiful personal touch for me. Family is my everything.”
Best advice for future brides
“Don’t forget to include your groom on decisions! It’s so easy to get carried away with all your ideas you’ve had since you were a little girl, but try to remember that it’s his day too.
I also recommend that you find a photographer whose shooting and editing style you love. It’s a huge deal trusting someone to capture your day. The photos are what you take away with you and bring out again months and years later to relive all the wonderful memories. Make sure you find one who captures everything you want captured.
If your day is about love and family, nothing else really matters. All those small details that you thought needed to be perfect, that you spent hours stressing over how they could go wrong, none of them matter on the day. It all fades into the background the first time your eyes meet your grooms.”
